Is Savannah Georgia walkable? Short, answer is Yes!

Savannah, Georgia, is a city that invites exploration on foot. With its historic charm and pedestrian-friendly layout, it's a walker's paradise. It is one reason why we love Savannah so much! It is as if General Oglethorpe designed it specifically with that purpose in mind for us back in the 1730s, what hindsight the General had back then! While most cities/towns these days are built around cars, Savannah truly is meant for exploring on foot. Its 22 squares, filled with monuments and historic homes, are just perfect for leisurely strolls.

From the bustling River Street to the artistic flair of the Whitaker Design District and Savannah College of Art and Design, there's much to discover. This guide will highlight the top attractions and experiences that make Savannah, Georgia, a walkable city worth exploring. I think it is one of the main reasons why so many European travelers feel at home here.

Savannah's Historic District: A Pedestrian's Delight

The heart of Savannah's walkability lies in its historic districts. This area is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States.

The district's layout, known as the Oglethorpe Plan, was designed with pedestrians in mind. It's a model of urban planning that prioritizes public spaces and aesthetics.

Walking through the historic district, you'll appreciate the city's commitment to preservation. It's like stepping back in time, with every step revealing a new piece of Savannah's rich history.

The Charm of Savannah's Squares and Parks

Savannah is famous for its 22 squares. Each square is a mini park, filled with monuments, museums, churches, and historic homes.

Here are a few must-visit squares:

  • Chippewa Square, where the famous "Forrest Gump" bench scene was filmed.

  • Johnson Square, the city's first square.

  • Pulaski Square, our personal favorite.

  • Madison Square, home to the historic Sorrel-Weed House.

  • Lafayette Square, home to the stunning cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

The city's largest park, Forsyth Park, is also a highlight. Its iconic fountain is a favorite photo spot for visitors.

River Street and Factors Walk: A Stroll Through History

River Street is a bustling waterfront area. It's lined with shops, restaurants, and historic buildings.

A short climb up from River Street leads you to Factors Walk. This area was once the cotton exchange hub of the city. Today, it's a maze of alleyways and iron bridges, offering a glimpse into Savannah's past.

Broughton Street and the Whitaker Design District: Shopper's Paradise on Foot

Broughton Street is a haven for shoppers. It's a walkable stretch filled with a variety of shopping options.

From high-end boutiques to local artisan shops, there's something for everyone. It's a perfect place to take a leisurely stroll and indulge in some retail therapy. A few of our favorite spots on the Broughton Street Corridor are The Paris Market, Half Moon Outfitters and The Savannah Bee Company.

A lesser known but arguably a more inviting place to shop is the Whitaker Design District with great local shops and convenient stops for anyone using the free city DOT bus.

The Paris Market

A one-stop-shop for all things chic and whimsical, The Paris Market offers vintage-inspired home decor, gifts, and clothing. Its distinctive ambiance transports visitors to a charming Parisian boutique. Located in a beautiful 1875 Italianate building, that also houses one of our favorite restaurants (Circa 1875), it offers a historic vibe while shopping and enjoying an espresso.

Savannah Bee Company

While primarily known for its honey, this charming store also features beautiful beeswax candles and body care products. It's a great place to find unique gifts and enjoy a taste of local flavors or even a mead tasting.

Half Moon Outfitters

Half Moon Outfitters is a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts. This boutique specializes in high-quality gear for a wide range of outdoor activities, including kayaking, hiking, and camping. We love their commitment to customer service and super friendly staff that are willing to help with whatever questions you may have about apparel, gear and or the Savannah area/Lowcountry.

A lesser known but arguably a more inviting place to shop is the Whitaker Design District with great local shops.

Whitaker Design Shops

Located along the scenic Whitaker Street, the Whitaker Design shops offer an array of artisanal goods, home decor, and unique gifts. This collective of local artists showcases their crafts, making it a must-visit for those looking to take home a piece of Savannah's creative spirit. The walk from the Printmaker's Inn is straightforward and allows you to enjoy the charming sights along the way.

Asher and Rye

One of our favorite shops in the Design District is Asher and Rye, a boutique known for its curated selection of stylish clothing, accessories, and homeware. This chic shop reflects Savannah's blend of contemporary style with historic charm. As you stroll from the Printmaker's Inn, you’ll appreciate the tree-lined streets and beautiful architecture, making your shopping experience even more enjoyable. Our favorite route to the district is down Barnard Street, with its local feeling and beautiful Chatham and Pulaski Squares.

PW Short

Nestled within the Whitaker Design District, the PW Short Store offers a distinctive shopping experience that celebrates local craftsmanship and design. This boutique features a carefully curated selection of home goods, clothing, and accessories, all with a focus on quality and originality. Scot, the lovely store owner, aims to recreate the inviting atmosphere of a small-town community meeting place, where shoppers can find a diverse range of products—from exquisite French copper pots to essential smartphone chargers, making it a fresh modern take on a general store.

Peaches

If you're seeking unique children's gifts, make your way to Peaches. This delightful store specializes in high-quality charming outfits, chic decor and playful essentials for babies and kids. Owner, Rebecca, picks brands and styles that fit her ethos: “perfect gifts, everyday essentials and modern nods to timeless classics.” Since it is only a 100 yards from Asher and Rye and PW Short, it is a great spot to hit up after or before either store.

Cultural Walks: SCAD and City Market

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) adds an artistic flair to the city. Many galleries and exhibits are open to the public and are easily accessible on foot from anywhere in the Historic District. Our favorite is the SCAD Museum located on MLK.

City Market is a central hub for entertainment, dining, and art. It's all within walking distance, making it a must-visit spot for culture enthusiasts. Although it is more on the touristy side, it does have one of favorite pizza joints in town, Vinnie Van Go Go’s and a fabulous new Irish Pub, Wexford.

Guided Walking Tours: History to Hauntings

Savannah offers a variety of guided walking tours. These tours focus on history, architecture, ghost stories, and culinary experiences. Insider tip: *our Favorite Walking Tours include Architectural Tours Of Savannah, Ghost Tours by Enocha Edenfield and History Tours by Savannah Dan.

Whether you're a history buff or a foodie, there's a walking tour that will cater to your interests. It's a great way to explore Savannah's rich heritage.

Accessibility and Safety While Walking in Savannah

Savannah is a pedestrian-friendly city. It has ample crosswalks and pedestrian signals, making it safe for walkers. However, the old cobblestones can make it challenging for those in wheel chairs or with walking impairments. The Free Dot bus operated by the city is a great option for getting around as well as the hop on hop off Trollies like the Old Town Trolley company.
